Dangerous Goods Shipping Notice

Some of our filter customers may be all too aware of the dreaded “hazardous shipping fee”. But many of our customers may have never heard of it, or wonder why is my shipment considered hazardous? Everyone in any field of chemistry knows that there are some chemicals out there, possibly ones that are used every day, that are not treated with the respect they deserve. The ugly truth is that many materials are dangerous and should always be handled in the proper manner, even before they are opened.

Some of our items that are flagged as dangerous goods and require special hazardous shipping include the lithium ion rechargeable batteries used in our crimper tools, and our oxygen and carbon dioxide gas filters. The lithium ion batteries used by CRS are lithium iron phosphate (LifePO4) batteries. These are much harder to ignite in the event of mishandling, so they have a lower likelihood of fire or explosion. However, the safety risks are still present since they contain a flammable electrolyte.

Gas purifiers are filled with media that adsorbs a certain contaminant that users want scrubbed from their gas flow.  This media when contained is generally harmless, and usually classified only as an irritant. Charcoal for example is used in hydrocarbon filters, and molecular sieve is used in moisture filters. Still, you should always refer to an SDS if you have any questions about a material you are handling, and always wear proper safety gear.

In some of our filters the adsorbing materials can be more dangerous. Oxygen adsorbent for example, becomes extremely hot when it is exposed to air. If the filter should fail and acquire a leak during shipping or use, the filter would become extremely hot, and be a possible source of ignition.

In addition to oxygen adsorbent, the material in our CO2 Scrubbers is very corrosive when exposed to air. Materials such as the oxygen adsorbent and CO2 scrubber are shown in the list of dangerous goods as determined by their composition and properties per international laws that regulate shipping.  Any material on this list must be shipped as such.

Hazardous shipping can be daunting, but not all these items incur additional fees. Even though our batteries are shipped as dangerous goods, we rarely ship enough at one time to acquire fees. Wait! There’s more good news… some of our filters contain only small amounts of hazardous materials that pose very little danger.  These are typically shipped as “Small Quantity Exception” and dodge the special shipping fees as well! Furthermore, CRS has also developed an alternative, completely non-hazardous filter line. This means that for each hazardous filter we offer we have a suitable non-hazardous option to get the job done!

If after all your in-depth research, you still end up choosing the product that requires hazardous fees, you will only get charged a hazardous shipping fee once per shipment, not per item. So, it is generally more economical to forecast future usage and order all your hazardous items in one order for a set period of time.

Please Note: While we make every effort to ensure items processed as dangerous goods can be delivered to the destination address, there are unforeseen circumstances that prevent that from happening. In that case, we will contact you with options for your order.  In the rare event we are unable to make shipment, any funds charged to your account would be credited back to you.

We know this is a lot of information to take in, but you can trust that CRS knows the ins and outs of all things hazardous and we are here to help! If you have any questions regarding dangerous goods shipping or why an item is considered hazardous, contact us at Sales@ChromRes.com.
